Ehomaki sushi rolls spark controversy - NHK NEWSLINE - News - NHK WORLD

In Japan, more than 6 million tons of foods are estimated to be discarded every year. A traditional Japanese custom of eating a dish called ehomaki has renewed debate on food loss and waste across the country. Ehomaki is a seasonal sushi roll that's believed to bring good luck when it's eaten on the last day of winter, usually in early February, facing the direction of best luck specified each year. Supermarkets and convenience stores tend to overproduce them, meaning vast amounts must be discarded. Experts say over US$10 million worth of ehomaki were thrown out last year.
